Welcome to Kestrels Class -Year 4
Class Teachers: Vicky Darious & Laura Flower
Learning Journey
This half term our learning journey questions are:
Relationships: How can we support the work of Exeter Foodbank? This will involve the children learning about how foodbanks work, who uses them and why they are important. The children will create posters to share what they have found out and to encourage people to donate food that can be spared.
Science: Why are forces essential in making our toys work? Our science enquiry will enable the children to get a hands-on sense of how magnets work. We will be looking at how magnets attract and repel as well as additional forces at play such as friction, air resistance and drag. The children will producing an explanation text detailing how a magnetic toy (such as a toy train and carriage) works, using the scientific understanding that they have gained.

Reading
This year, year 4 will be recording their reading through a reading journal. We expect children to read with an adult every day and record this in their journal. Children should be bringing their reading book into school, as there are opportunities each day for the children to be reading for pleasure.
Maths
In Kestrels Class this half term in maths, we are starting the year by looking at place value. This will involve the children exploring number, collaborating, reasoning and proving their answers with resources. Homework will be set based on the learning that we have covered in our lessons, to enable the children to demonstrate their understanding as well as cementing the knowledge.

PE Days
Our PE days are every Wednesday and Friday. We are lucky enough to have Exeter City Football club joining us, who are taking some of the sessions in the second half term. The children last year truly benefitted from these sessions, learning vital skills such as how to be a good team player, how to communicate during games and how to cope when a game didn’t go as planned. Please ensure that your child comes in with a clearly named PE kit.

Outdoor Learning
Our outdoor learning is on a Monday. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing (water proof coat and wellies in the wetter and colder months, and sun cream and sun hat in the warmer, sunnier months). Our outdoor sessions are a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop skills in team building, communication and problem solving.
Homework
The children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day and to complete an activity from the Independent Activity list once a week. They are also expected to practice their times tables (Times Tables Rockstars will support this). Homework books are expected to be handed in every Thursday and will be sent home every Friday.
